Compliance
In 2014, Photoluminescent Exit Signs were included in Australia’s National Construction Code (NCC), enabling Australia to join a global movement to a more sustainable, long-lasting Exit Sign technology. This change was approved by the Australian Building Codes Board.
The NCC is enacted in each State and Territory by appropriate local Acts and Regulations.
NCC Deemed to Satisfy
Smarterlite’s 16m and 24m size Exit Signs are a Deemed-to-Satisfy solution in the NCC, which means they can be used as exit signs in Australian buildings when installed in accordance with Part E4 D8 of the version of the NCC that applies in your State and Territory.
Specifically, in NCC (2022), they must be installed as follows:
• Photoluminescent exit signs in accordance with NCC Specification 25
• Battery backed-up exit signs in accordance with AS/NZS 2293
In NCC (2025), they must be installed as follows:
• Passive photoluminescent exit signs in accordance with NCC Specification 25
• Hybrid photoluminescent exit signs in accordance with Standards Australia TS 5367
• Battery backed-up exit signs in accordance with AS/NZS 2293
NCC Performance Solutions
Installation that is not in accordance with NCC Part E4 D8, or larger sizes of Smarterlite Exit Signs, require Performance Solutions. Smarterlite can provide contact details for building professionals that will assist you with design and approvals. This is a straightforward process that many of our clients undertake to realise the significant environmental and financial benefits.
AS/NZS 2293 and Photoluminescent Exit Signs
AS/NZS 2293 is the Australian Standard for Emergency Lighting and Exit Signs for Buildings. For photoluminescent exit signs, the NCC limits its scope to only the appearance and placement of the photoluminescent exit signs to ensure that all exit signs, irrespective of their technology, look the same and are placed in similar locations in buildings. No other part of AS/NZS 2293 applies to photoluminescent exit signs. The NCC has precedence over Australian Standards.
