7News featured the installation of LED safety lights in the footpath at the intersection of Swanston Street and Little Collins Street in central Melbourne. The story informed the community about the installation of the first set of LED Safety Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSI) in Victoria. They will aid busy, distracted or vision impaired pedestrians in the inner-city.

The footpath pavement lights change colour with the traffic lights, giving pedestrians a clear visual signal about whether they should stop or go. Feedback from users is that the larger, bright, in-ground lights are more easily seen than the traditional traffic signals for pedestrians that are positioned across the road.

The installation was funded by Victoria’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC). The project is managed by VicRoads and the City of Melbourne.
