For the Spoken 2025 bicycle show in Sydney, we were thrilled to collaborate with the talented team at Baum Cycles from Geelong, Victoria. Like us, Baum understands the importance of safety, especially for cyclists sharing our roads.

When the opportunity arose for Baum to use Smarterlite’s PureLite luminescent paint on their hand-crafted bicycles, our Chief Technology Officer, Zoran Ovuka, knew something special was in the making.

As Darren from Baum aptly put it, “I will always support any product that improves the safety of cyclists… I can see this paint being a really good choice for commuters, share bikes too.”

His enthusiasm to see what could be achieved with PureLite was fantastic, and we were particularly interested in their approach to application. Applying PureLite is like using any other high-quality paint or coating, a process Baum are experts in.

With the care and professionalism of Baum’s team, the fully painted frame, fork, seat post, stem, and handlebars of the Baum bike became a beacon of light in the dark. Darren’s team was “blown away,” so much so that this “quick side-project” became the star of the Spoken 2025 show in Sydney where Baum showcased the incredible visual impact of Baum and Smarterlite’s collaboration in a custom dark room.

Smarterlite’s photoluminescent coatings not only enhance safety but also create truly unique and eye-catching designs. For designers and artists, brand recognition could be improved by incorporating photoluminescent materials into the brand identity of companies and products, and their marketing campaigns.

The same principles of absorbing light energy and emitting it as a persistent glow can be applied to a wide range of vehicles, equipment, buildings, signs and artwork, creating visual appeal and better visibility and safety. CTO Zoran Ovuka explained, “Enhancing the visibility of vehicles and people can only improve safety. Baum’s bicycle and Smarterlite’s ute showcase what can be achieved.”
